Whether you can wash the bogolan depends on the particular piece.
Since these are hand made with different "recipes", the
level of colorfastness varies from piece to piece. Since it’s
created from strips sewn together, we suggest you remove a strip and
do a test-wash by hand or machine. Use cold or warm water, gentle
cycle, and a mild soap. If you are happy with the result, repeat the
process on the entire piece, then stitch the test piece back on with
a simple hand stitch or machine zigzag stitch.
If washing the bogolan by machine, put the piece
in a lingerie bag,. Wash it alone, or with similar, dark colored
fabrics (denim, etc.) If you find that a lot of the dye runs after
laundering, consider running the rinse cycle again before laundering
your next load of laundry. Air dry or tumble dry low. Remove from
the dryer until nearly dry, then press with a steam iron if desired.
Mudcloth can be dry cleaned as well, but you might find it difficult
to find a dry cleaner who will handle it, as they generally resist
working with any hand dyed fabrics. With any cleaning method, you
should expect that there might beat least some fading.
