A Yinka Shonibare Exhibit in Philly? I’m There!

Are you sitting down?? I just found out that the Barnes Foundation (which I’d never heard of until today…) is exhibiting the works of Yinka Shonibare from January 24 through April 21!  Born in the UK of Nigerian decent, his work is Fabrigasmic… Sadly, I will miss his visit in person as I’ll be out of town at the opening (dammit!!).  But I’ve heard him speak before so I can live with that I guess…

Meanwhile, I do plan to attend a related program on March 23, a talk on African textiles on March 23. It’s already in my Blackberry! Roadtrip, anyone?  We can meet for lunch before, or have tea after, or both…I think I might even have to pull out some of my wax prints and make up something to wear for the occasion ; )

Canustand these pants! From the Party Time: Re-Imagine America installation exhibit at the Newark Museum (2009).

  1. I LOVE Shonibare’s work. I missed an opportunity to see it years ago when one of the Smithsonian had major exhibit. The PBS series art21 did a segment on him http://video.pbs.org/video/1281770054/
You’ve likely seen it already. I would love to hear more about the textile talk on March 23. Maybe I can make it a day trip.
Got my Fabrigasm mag, and I’m showing it off. Thanks for the care that you took and the respect that you have for our art.

Thanks for the link, Glenda – I hadn’t seen this one! Somewhere in my post is a link to the lecture & other info. He’s speaking there THIS weekend, but I’ll be out of town!!! So I’ll have to “settle” for March 23 – he won’t be there in person but I figure it’s a good time to catch more than just the exhibit. Let me know if you plan to come up!

Please tell your friends that they can order their own copies of Fabrigasm! — lisa
